Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider and do not accept insurance directly. Many insurance plans provide out-of-network reimbursement for psychotherapy services. If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, I can provide you with monthly statements which will include all the necessary information and codes for reimbursement from your insurance provider.

How can I find out more about my out-of-network benefits?

I recommend calling your insurance company to find out more about your out-of-network benefits before we speak, as this will help you better understand the costs of therapy.

These questions can help you find out more details about your benefits:


  • Do I have coverage for out-of-network mental health outpatient visits?

  • What is my out-of-network deductible for each calendar year and how much of that has already been met?

  • What are the “allowable” or “usual and customary” rates for mental health providers in the zip code of the providers location (10155)

  • What percentage of therapy service fees are covered?

    • Please ask about the following CPT procedure codes: initial consultation 90791, 45 minute individual therapy 90834, 60 minute individual therapy sessions 90837.

  • What is the “Out of pocket maximum” per year after which insurance pays 100%?

  • Is there a limit or maximum number of visits covered each calendar year? 

  • Is pre-authorization required?

What is your cancellation policy?

If you are unable to make your appointment, please give at least 48 hours notice. This allows me to offer this time to others, and helps us to try to find another time to meet. If there is availability, we can reschedule our appointment within the same week and thus avoid the late cancellation fee. Please note that otherwise appointments cancelled within 48 hours will be charged at the rate of your session.

What form of payment do you accept?

I accept cash, checks, or credit cards. Many clients are also able to use their flexible spending plan (such as HSA or FSA).

Do you offer telehealth (phone or online) sessions?

Yes! 2020 has taught us all the importance of being adaptive in the face of unprecedented circumstances. Please note that all sessions are currently being held remotely.

How do telehealth appointments work? 

Telehealth appointments allow for virtual face-to-face sessions for when we cannot meet in person. I use a secure video conferencing platform to ensure that our sessions remain secure, and which allows for screen sharing so we can review and share materials together in session. You’ll use a personal link to access your virtual appointment, which will place you in a virtual “waiting room” until I am ready to begin. In order to get the most out of your appointments, you’ll need a comfortable private space, a stable internet connection, and a device such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet.  Many people appreciate the convenience of telehealth, and we can discuss whether telehealth appointments are a good fit for you.


How do I get started? And what should I expect when I reach out?

If you are interested in learning more, please reach out on the contact page. Once I receive your submission, I will get in touch to set up a complementary 15 minute phone consultation to learn more about what you are looking for. This call will also give you a chance to ask me more detailed questions about the type of work I do, and to see if we would be a good fit. At this point, we may decide to schedule an initial consultation session. In this session I will learn more about you, discuss goals for therapy, and share with you my treatment recommendations and thoughts about next steps. 


What will the first visit be like? 

Prior to our first session, I will send an access link to a secure client portal. Here you can review practice policies and fill out a few questionnaires. Our first meeting will be an opportunity for me to get to know more about you, what’s bringing you into treatment, and what you hope to get out of the process. I will ask a bit about any previous treatment experiences and how you’ve handled problems in the past to learn more about what’s been helpful and what hasn’t worked as well. We will also talk about other relevant areas of your life to help me gain a more complete understanding of who you are. This session will also give us a chance to collaboratively create treatment goals, which we will continue to check in on and revise throughout our work together. Lastly, I will share my impressions and recommendations about next steps.


What does therapy look like?

The beginning of therapy will focus on establishing treatment goals, observing patterns, and explore what you want more of in your life and what gets in the way of that. It will also give us a chance to get a feel for working together. As we proceed, how therapy looks will depend on your goals. Take a look at the Services page to learn more about the different types of therapeutic approaches and to get a better idea about what treatment may look like for you.


Regardless of the specifics, treatment will always be collaborative and active. We will be looking for opportunities to translate the work we are doing out of the therapy room and into your everyday life. Click here to learn more about some of the common elements of treatment.


How long are sessions and how often will we meet?

Most sessions are 45 minutes in length. Typically I recommend meeting on a weekly basis to ensure you have the momentum and consistency to get the most out of therapy. 


Intensive treatment options are available depending on your specific needs. This may mean meeting multiple times per week and/or for 60 or 90 minute sessions. Feel free to ask me if you think this option may be right for you.


As we wrap up treatment, we may also choose to meet less frequently to “phase out” of treatment, or we may schedule periodic check ins. This offers a chance to reflect on and problem solve what it’s like integrating the therapy tools without regular appointments.


Do you work with people outside of your specialty?

I work with individuals with a wide range of issues and therapeutic goals. When we talk, I’ll get a better sense of what you’d like to work on. If at any point I feel your needs would be better served elsewhere, I will do my best to provide referrals and discuss treatment options. Above all, my goal is to help you, whether that means working together or pointing you in the right direction.


How will I know if you are the right therapist for me?

I believe therapy is a collaborative process. I will check in with you about how the process is going, and discuss if therapy is meeting your needs. I believe this should be an open conversation to make sure you are getting the most out of the experience.
